The flag of costa rica was adopted on november 27, 1906. The flag is rectangular and has a ratio of 5 to 3. from top to bottom, the flag is composed of blue, white, red, white and blue five parallel wide strips. The red bar is twice as wide as the blue and white one. The blue and white colors come from the original federal flag of central America, with the red added in 1848 when the republic was established. blue represents the sky, opportunity, idealism and perseverance; Red represents passion and the blood shed for independence; white represents peace, wisdom and happiness.
